Day began with warm temps, highs in
upper 70s, and dew points in mid 60s.
While returning to Boone from Eldora,
a line of clouds was noted along the Western horizon. At approximately 17:25, near the intersection of county road E18
and R27, two rope-like structures were noticed at the Southern end of the cloud
line. These ropes ran from the cloud
base down to the horizon. As we
continued in a southwesterly direction, the ropes disappeared. Approximately one mile South of county road
E18 on county road R21, a single rope structure appeared again. By the time we were able to get in position
for a photograph, one minute later, the rope had disappeared. The remnants of the rope structure are
visible in the picture on the next page, taken at location 1. Chase was continued towards Boone, but the
rope structure(s) did not reappear.
Due to the distance and lack of any
reports to the NWS, it is not definite if this was a funnel cloud or just and
odd cloud structure. Either way it was
an interesting sight to see, and two other vehicles were stopped along country
road R21 North of Boone watching the cloud.

The low hanging cloud to the left of the picture at once seemed to be a possible funnel cloud. Picture taken looking Southwest from the intersection of county roads R21 and 155th Street, location 1 on the map.
